Lisbon has been transformed into a tourist-led urban economy during the last 10 years, when a large amount of tourists, travellers and foreign students came massively to the city. Later, in the context of the financial post-crisis the social and economic urban structure of Lisbon was profoundly transformed to embrace the growing demand of international tourism.

Besides the central role of accommodation economic activities from hostels and hotels to AirBnb and Booking.com, the night-life leisure industry is one of the most important actors involved in this process of urban transformation.

The images of night-time consumption (circulating through internet and from mouth to mouth) are an asset for urban tourism industry, contributing to shape the imaginary postcard of a particular city. From Fado to kizomba, from Cante alentejano to Chorinho, from Brazilian popular music to Hard Rock, from Reggae to Electro/minimal, different musical styles are represented in Lisbon’s night-time venues offering all kind of experiences to the foreign visitors. Moreover, some entertainment companies are organizing Pub-Crawls and nocturne tracks all over Lisbon widening the borders of the foreign leisure throughout the city.

The fourth LXNIGHTS Meeting: “The urban tourist as a night-life consumer. Efects of touristification in Lisbon’s night leisure” will take place on October 29 at Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa (CIUL), located  in Picoas Plaza (Rua Viriato, 13) at 18:00h. The debates are free and open to the general public.
